The Epistle to the Hebrews was written to Hebrews who had professed faith in the Lord Jesus but were under great pressure to return to Judaism. Whilst solemnly warning his readers of the grave dangers of doing this, the writer brings a heart-warming exposition of the person and work of Christ. He emphasizes the finality of the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ compared to the necessity for constant offerings demanded by the Mosaic law. Having presented Christ to his readers he brings a final exhortation, ‘Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come’, Heb. 13. 13, 14.
Norman Mellish has studied this epistle over many years and this book is the fruit of his deliberations. There is much that is challenging and thought provoking, and the famous ‘warning passages’ are carefully considered and explained.
