Many sages have searched for truth throughout the centuries. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle sought it through reason. Others have looked for truth in mysticism, hoping that meditation and secret rites would usher them into the knowledge of things beyond the scope of normal human understanding. Still others deny the existence of veracity and meaning in our universe, vainly denying the obvious existence of a God who determines the truth, Ps. 53. 1. Like cynical Pilate of old, they sarcastically query ‘What is truth?’, John 18. 38. God’s word clearly tells us that truth exists and is centred in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Lord Jesus is the truth because He tells us the truth about mankind. Whereas man protests that he is basically good, the Lord Jesus asserts that ‘this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil’, John 3. 19. By His life of perfect obedience to the law and will of God, Christ presented a holy contrast to the impure and selfish lifestyles of human beings. In the Lord Jesus, we see the truth seeking man, rather than the other way around! Not only did He show the true fallen state of humanity, He also showed to them the character of God. During His sojourn on earth, He accurately displayed the attributes of the Creator. Holiness, righteousness, love, mercy, power, wisdom, and all the other characteristics of the Father were manifested in the peerless life of the Lord Jesus.

As the Truth, Christ shows us that God is not fooled by man’s attempts to cover his wickedness. What is more, He shows us the inflexible line of perfection that the Almighty demands of His creatures. Thankfully, the Truth also tells us that He has made it possible for sinful man to be pardoned and brought into God’s family through His death and resurrection. He confounds the wise of this world by telling them the reality of the world to come, which is entirely based on His character and work. Those who desire the truth will find Him completely accessible through ‘repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ’, Acts 20. 21.
