THE PSALMIST’S SOLILOQUY OF FAITH

This verse is taken from:
Psalm 27
Thought of the day for:
5 December 2023

Once again we have an introversion as follows:

  1. Confession expressed, v. 1.
  2. Confidence begotten, v. 2.
  3. Conquest assured, v. 3.
  4. Covert desired, v. 4.
  5. Conviction founded, v. 5.

The psalmist’s pathway is still troubled. He is encountering evildoers, adversaries, foes, opposition, v. 3, enemies, forsakings, false witnesses, vv. 10, 12. In this world, the saint of God must suffer tribulation. From such circumstances, however, he looks back, up and on. His aspirations are high and his prospect sure.

His soliloquy therefore begins with the Confession of present facts, v. 1. He knows Jehovah; his God is his light (for the darkness), salvation (for the dangers) and strength (for the difficulties), and he can thus confidently assert provision against fear. This is truth accepted. How often, however, we acquiesce to truth, but never submit to its power. Doctrine held must become doctrine proved.

Yet David turns his confession into Conviction, v. 5. Note the connecting word “for”. The confession of his lips becomes the conviction of his heart. Contemplating the day of trouble, he says the Lord shall keep him “secretly” R.V., “hide him” in His pavilion (His light), A.V.; He shall hide him in the Covert of His tabernacle (His salvation), R.V., and He shall lift him up upon a rock (His strength), A.V.

Is our prospect a sure conviction? Such is founded on a Confidence begotten by past experience, v. 2. When evildoers came upon him (note the tense), they stumbled and fell, and will again. For Jesus Christ remains the same for ever as yesterday.

Now he moves into action, and seeks the desired Covert, v. 4. He has his priorities right, and pursues them, v. 5; this is to dwell permanently in the house of the Lord. Our privilege, even amidst confusion and stress, is also to dwell in this holy place, the centre of peace, beholding the beauty of the Lord; there problems are dismissed, and problems answered.

From the covert, the vista is always bright, bringing sacrifice, singing, seeking, security and serenity.
