This verse is taken from:
Psalm 111
“His understanding is infinite”, Psa. 147. 5, is a truth that every believer gladly confesses. By wisdom He made the heavens, 136. 5, and by the wisdom of grace He is making a people prepared for that heaven.
These are “children of wisdom”, Matt. 11. 19. Their wisdom began with the fear of the Lord, Psa. 111. 10. They rejected the wisdom that is from below, James 3. 15; 1 Cor. 1. 20, and as babes accepted God’s revelation of the Person of His Son, Matt. 11. 25-27.
The world by its philosophic wisdom knew not God, but it pleased God by the (seeming) foolish message of the cross to deliver them that believe. Thus Christ became their wisdom, 1 Cor. 1. 24. Even after sin had held sway, in repentance one could affirm “in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom”, Psa. 51. 6. They are renewed in knowledge after the image of Him who recreated them, Col. 3. 10, and exclaim “to him that is of power to stablish you … to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever”, Rom. 16. 25-27.
Having found the Lord as our Wisdom, we are to walk in wisdom. For this God “gives counsel”, Psa. 16. 7, by His testimonies, 119. 24, as we let the Word of God dwell in us in all wisdom, Col. 3. 16. But a teachable spirit is necessary, for it is the meek that He teaches His way, Psa. 25. 9. The meekness of wisdom, James 3. 13, will be in the spirit of the Lord who was meek and lowly in heart, and whose yoke is accepted, Matt. 11. 29. So “a good understanding have all they that do his commandments”, Psa. 111. 10.
Whilst so walking wisely, we should be assured that the all-wise One is guiding by His counsel, and afterwards will receive us to glory, Psa. 73. 24. He knows the way we take, Job 23. 10. He knows our frame, Psa. 103. 14. He guides by the skilfulness of His hands, and according to the integrity of His heart, 78. 72. He cannot fail: being omnipotent, all things are possible with Him; being all-wise, He plans and works for our highest good. Our wisdom is willingly to accept this; then as children of wisdom, we shall vindicate God, Matt. 11. 19.
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God”, Rom. 11. 33.
