This verse is taken from:
2 Corinthians 11. 12-33
The dark ages were marked by men who sought to practice the art of alchemy: turning straw and other worthless material into gold. But Satan has accomplished something far better. He, the embodiment of darkness, has transformed himself into an angel or messenger of light.
Paul doubtless had the motif of the Garden of Eden in mind as he penned these words. Into that pure and unsullied picture came the serpent. Think of the ‘light’ he brought with him. First of all, he added to the word of God, ‘Ye shall not eat of every tree?’ as though God had forbidden access to all the trees. Then, he amended God’s word by telling Eve that she would not die. Then, he attacked God’s word to discredit it. Finally, he altered God’s word by telling her that they would be as gods, knowing good and evil for themselves.
He caused her to doubt God’s word; then he denied God’s truth. Finally, he decried God’s motives. He was successful in undermining Eve’s confidence in the word of God. The results need no elaboration.
The same sinister forces were at work in Corinth. To be successful, however, an undermining of Paul’s authority was also required. Discredit Paul and you would discredit his teaching. Discredit his teaching and you have successfully neutralized the word of God to the assembly at Corinth.
The goal and tactics of Satan have not developed beyond those he employed in the Garden. He does not need to change them; they have never been more fruitful for him than in our own day. With professions of the new light of scholarship, he has managed to convince many of the unreliability of scripture. With the new light of scepticism, he has converted many to atheism. With the claims of ‘further revelation’, he has added to the word of God and led many astray in ‘new’ religions. If he cannot deny the scriptures, he will dilute them.
We have known the ‘light of the knowledge of the glory of God’, 2 Cor. 4. 6, as revealed in His Son. We are to test all truth by the light of that knowledge.
