This verse is taken from:
1 Corinthians 14. 1-14
Trumpets sounding in the assembly? Battles to be fought outside the door (hopefully not inside)? The imagery is eloquent and is taken directly from Numbers chapter 10 where the two silver trumpets were to sound over Israel’s worship, to prepare for warfare, and to guide them in their walk.
Paul likens the blowing of a trumpet to the handling of divine truth. In Corinth, it was coming through revelation which then became knowledge which the prophet imparted to the people of God as teaching, 1 Cor. 14. 6. The disorder which marked the assembly was resulting in the message from God not being heard. Once they had been led away after dumb idols, 1 Cor. 12. 2; the God with whom they were now linked desired to speak through His servants.
This portion highlights several features which should characterize ministry in the local assembly. The teaching needs to be edifying v. 3; the spiritual well-being of others is the chief concern of those who handle the word of God. It must also be marked by clarity and simplicity of language, vv. 7-11. This does not mean simple, superficial ministry. The language of John in his writings is a combination of simplicity of words and profundity of thought. All the people of God must be able to understand the teaching being given.
It may appear obvious, but the teaching in a local assembly must communicate the word of God, v. 6. Illustrations, anecdotes, and current events may help to illuminate a passage, but it is the word of God which alone carries weight in the heart and spiritual experience of a believer. Allow the scriptures to speak for themselves. Do not take verses out of context simply to press a personal viewpoint. If the scriptures do not teach something, then do not import it into the text.
The chapter before us gives other principles to guide ministry in God’s assembly. The importance of this is obvious: there is a battle to be fought! The teaching of the word of God in the local assembly must be clear and scriptural, relevant and practical to enable believers to face an evil and seductive world, a subtle and persistent adversary, and the flesh within.
