This verse is taken from:
Psalm 37
In studying the psalms in relation to man, it is noticeable how differently the righteous and the wicked are seen. Often expression is given to concern, even puzzlement, as the prosperity of the wicked is seen. They spread themselves like a great tree—overshadowing the righteous in their rapid advancement in worldly wealth and status; cf. Psa. 73. 3. Yet there is no doubt where heaven’s approval lies, and also the quality of the life that pleases God. “The Lord knoweth the way of the righteous”, 1. 6; “The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry”, 34. 15.
Our psalm for today can be used to illustrate several themes, but one theme for our meditation is that of the contrast drawn between the righteous and the wicked. There is encouragement in this study, because without doubt it emphasizes the worth of right living. Remember as you read “righteous” that the believer’s only righteousness is in Christ. It is imputed on the grounds of the blood shed at Calvary. It is accepted by faith. How true that “the just shall live by his faith”, Hab. 2. 4. Let us look briefly at four contrasts.
1. “A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked”, v. 16. Possessions are measured, not by quantity, but by quality. Not that the righteous are foolish in the matters of material things; rather their priorities are right, with the best values of wealth, treasure in heaven, and spiritual blessings in the heavenlies, Eph. 1. 3.
2. “The arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the Lord upholdeth the righteous”, v. 17. Power in the hands of the wicked is self-centred, often despotic, cruel and vulnerable. The strength of the righteous lies in Jehovah, the Lord of hosts. In this there is no failure or defeat, but the assurance of victory.
3. “The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous showeth mercy, and giveth”, v. 21. The perspective of the wicked is all take and no give, a selfish grasp on gain; the righteous is generous, ready to give, and in compassion to share his possessions. Unselfish giving is the right way.
4. “The transgressors shall be destroyed … But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord”, vv. 38-40. Here is the climax of all contrasts: the righteous are safe—preserved.
