The late William Rodgers was well known and greatly appreciated by the older generation of the Lord’s people. Many were profited by his wide-ranging, penetrating, and balanced understanding of the Word of God through an oral teaching ministry in the U.K., U.S.A. and Canada. His ministry reached an even wider audience through the many articles he contributed to several Christian magazines.

This book makes available in a more permanent form some of this written ministry. The articles are divided into seven sections. Three of these treat O.T. books and themes, drawing lessons from the lives of some of the Kings of Israel and Judah, a selection of the Psalms, and miscellaneous subjects from Genesis, the two Books of Samuel, and 1 Chronicles. Four of the sections provide notes on the NT. Epistles 1 Corinthians, 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, Hebrews, and 1 & 2 Peter. From this, the range of help offered can be gathered.

Throughout the book thoughtful treatment is given of the “difficulties” which appear, e.g. regarding Malachah, p. 12; Zechariah, p. 21 ; Hezekiah and the high places, p. 30; 1 Peter 3.18-20; 4. 6. There are also numbers of helpful outlines indicating the development of the paragraphs and books being considered, e.g. on 2 Chron. 20. 6-12, p. 16; on Psalm 107, p. 77; on 1 Cor. 1 -4, p. 105; on Hebrews 1, p. 187; on 1 Peter, p. 223. Word themes, so useful in considering a subject synthetically, are scattered here and there as so many handfuls on purpose, e.g. “know ye not” in 1 Cor., p. 100; “the faithÚ in 1 Tim., p. 149; “souls” in 1 Peter, p. 216. The penetrating character studies bring out, in a forceful way, the relevance of God’s Word to all generations. The Index forms a useful addition to a book in which the rich, spiritual character of the author’s ministry lives on.
