‘Till He Come’

Our Lord Jesus Christ has given us four gracious commands “till he come”.

Firstly, the most precious of all is remembrance. Worship is the highest occupation of the soul and the Lord’s supper is for that purpose, that is, to remember Him and to show forth His death “till he come”, 1 Cor. 11. 26.

Secondly, we have the loving command to follow Him. The call to those first disciples was “Come and see" and “Follow me”, John i. 39,43. In John 21, we have the Lord’s command to Peter who asked the question concerning John (the disciple whom Jesus loved), “Lord, and what shall this man do?”. The Lord answered, “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me”, w. 21-22.

Thirdly, we have the command given to one of the seven churches in Revelation 2. 25, “hold fast till I come”. And to the church in Philadelphia, John wrote, “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown”, 3. 11. Elsewhere we are exhorted to “hold fast the form of sound words”, 2 Tim. 1. 13; to “hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering (for he is faithful that promised”, Heb. 10. 23; to “hold fast the confidence and rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end”, 3. 6.

And lastly, the imperative command “Occupy till I come”, Luke 19. 13, was included by the Lord in His parable to the servants with the ten pounds – truly a challenge to each of us. How urgent is this commission in these closing days of grace. “Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching”, Luke 12. 37.
