Question: Is it good for us to prepare for the Lord’s supper?

Answer

This may seem at first sight to be an unimportant question; however, it is really of vital importance to Christian growth and worship.

It is possible for us as believers to fill our leisure time during the week, particularly on Saturdays, with every form of pursuit apart from spiritual preparation for worship on the Lord’s Day. This means that many can be unprepared for God-honouring worship when they arrive at the Lord’s supper. Minds are full of flashbacks to what has seen or heard the day and evening before, and concentration, even for a moment, on the Person of the Lord is greatly hindered.

It is the Father’s desire that there should be spiritual worship, John 4. 24, ‘God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worshipHim in spirit and in truth’. How often we are unsatisfactory in this respect, because there has not been proper spiritual and prayerful meditation upon the scriptures, and the One who is the subject of all scripture, the Lord Himself.

This is not to say that we should come along to the meeting with set sermons or ministry, which may be inappropriate in the context of meeting and the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Rather, that we should be throughout the days of the week, saturating ourselves in the scriptures and feeding upon the Person of Christ, so that when it comes to the Lord’s Day we come with our baskets full for Him.

Deuteronomy 26. 2-4, That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt go unto the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place His Name there. And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I profess this day unto the Lord thy God, that I am come unto the country which the Lord sware unto our fathers for to give us. And the priest shall take the basket out of thine hand, and set it down before the altar of the Lord thy God.’

The vital question is, are we prepared to make the sacrifice?

Hebrews 13. 15, ‘By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name’. Such an approach, and such expression of worship will surely result in honour and glory being brought to the Lord.
