An aged brother, who had never previously written to any publisher of Christian literature, recently wrote to us. With his agreement we publish the following extract from his letter:
"For some time now, one has read and heard of the expression “Father God”. Each time I have read or heard it I have felt in my spirit that it is a totally wrong expression. I cannot find it in Scripture, but I do find:
"Giving thanks… unto God and the Father”, Eph. 5. 20.
"I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God”, John 20.17.
"To us there is but one God, the Father”, 1 Cor. 8. 6.
Scripture keeps the two ideas distinct. The Lord does not say, “I ascend to my Father God, and your Father God”. Among other things, the Father is One who begets. Does the Father God beget other gods?
Satan is ever ready to denigrate divine Persons, and by very subtle means, and I cannot help feeling that the expression “Father God” is doing just this. Let us not confuse what Scripture keeps distinct".
We are grateful to our brother for graciously drawing attention to this. “Those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil”, and who have a care for the Lord’s people, can always render a great service by helping others to distinguish things which differ.
