Here is a book originally published in 1987 that deserves to be brought forward and introduced to a new generation of readers. Although bearing the modest sub-heading, ‘A physician’s remarkable prescription for living in this biography of Jesus of Nazareth’, it must take its place among the better commentaries on Luke’s Gospel that are available. Beautifully written, it concentrates upon the literary structure of Luke, endeavouring to ‘understand Luke’s flow of thought and the message which he was inspired to convey’. In an introductory chapter David Gooding sets out the form of his approach to the study as ‘highly technical’. For this reason he suggests that some readers may prefer to go straight through to the commentary section and having worked through that, return to the introductory chapter afterwards where all at that stage will be more easily understood.
The commentary itself is written in language that is anything but technical, and must surely benefit readers of all sorts. The vivid way in which he presents his material enhances the message of the gospel, in that it increases our appreciation of the perfection and beauty of Christ’s devoted service on earth. His comments are highly perceptive, original and calculated to open up new avenues of thought in the minds of readers. Here is a book that should take its place on the shelves of all dedicated Bible students.
